How to present a petition to NELC

NEW PETITIONS SCHEME ENHANCES LOCAL DEMOCRACY IN NORTH EAST LINCOLNSHIRE

THE council has introduced new arrangements to accept and manage petitions.

The revised petition scheme was introduced on June 15, making sure that public petitions are properly dealt with by the council.

Previously, most petitions submitted to the council were received by scrutiny panels. Under the new arrangements, ‘ordinary’ petitions, for example, those containing a minimum of 20 signatures, will now be submitted to the appropriate portfolio holder for consideration.

Decisions made by portfolio holders will be subject to appeal to the relevant scrutiny panel, if the petition organiser wants to exercise that right.

ILLEGAL TOBACCO TRADE: AN EVIL TRADE THAT DESTROYS JOBS AND COMMUNITIES

Smoking causes 80,000 deaths in the UK and costs the economy of Yorkshire and the Humber £1.1 billion every year.

Cancer research UK estimates that illicit tobacco products are responsible for four times as many deaths as illicit drugs. As illegal cigarettes are far cheaper than legal, duty paid products and hence they greatly reduce the incentive for people to quit.

Open Mind Service available close to the East Marsh

TACKLING MENTAL HEALTH WITH ‘OPEN MINDS’ IN NORTH EAST LINCOLNSHIRE

BUILDING on the success of the Grimsby branch, North East Lincolnshire Care Trust Plus has opened its second Open Minds centre.

It is situated at 13-15 Grimsby Road, Cleethorpes and is being opened to provide better access for people in and around Cleethorpes.

Open Minds opened its main building in Osborne Street, Grimsby, in February 2008. It provides a support service for people aged over 16 who are experiencing common mental health problems like depression, anxiety and stress. 

The service encourages self -referral, quick access and a choice of interventions. It also promotes positive mental health and well-being.

Services offered at Osborne Street include: improved access to psychological therapies, educational classes, exercise and dance workshops, relaxation, guided walks and meditation.

Since opening in 2008, the service has received 5,893 referrals and the staff team has increased from five to 23. From September 2009, the service has also received funding from IAPT, which is a government initiative to provide quick access to psychological therapies for the population, as well as helping people to stay in employment. NEXT year, the national Census will be taking place – and in advance of the survey being carried out, a number of temporary Census posts are being recruited.

 

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) is managing the Census, and with the help of Capita Resourcing, recruitment will begin in this month (September).
