Cutting smoking will help your pocket and your health

YOU might think the stress of a failing economy would lead more people to smoke, but historically financial downturns have made people smoke less.

Research released to mark No Smoking Day (March 11) showed that 36 per cent of the nine million smokers in Great Britain were thinking about or planning to cut down or quit as a direct result of the economic downturn. The poll also showed that 9 per cent intended to take the first step and make a quit attempt on that day.

Greg Gilbert, Smokefree Alliance coordinator at the council, said: "Lately, most smokers have been talking about the high price of cigarettes during this recessionary time. They talk about switching brands, moving from 20s to 10s and cutting back just enough to save a few pence a day. They also talk regularly about where the deals are this week - supermarket versus corner shop, and so on.

Facelift scheme for East Marsh properties

Details have been released about a scheme to give properties in the East Marsh a makeover. Around 70 properties in the area will all benefit from brick cleaning, repointing of rendering, replacement of guttering fascia and fall pipes and the replacement of timber windows with upvc and boundary walls.

The locations for the project will be chosen soon and is just one aspect of the ongoing Fresh Start East Marsh project, a 10-year plan to transform the area through a programme of renovation and regeneration.

Copies of the quarterly East Marsh Express are now available and can be picked up from Guilford House, 60 Guilford Street Grimsby and will hopefully shortly be available on this website

Quids in - will you benefit?

Quids In - will you benefit?

WILL you be Quids In? That's the question North East Lincolnshire Council is asking its residents as it launches a major campaign to make sure that everyone in the borough receives the benefits they are entitled to.

The Quids In campaign started on Monday, June 22, and aims to provide eligible households with extra cash towards rent and council tax.

Cindy Laherty, benefits and payments manager, said: "We realise in this current economic downturn that households need every penny they can get to make ends meet. The sad reality is that many residents are not aware that they are entitled to extra help towards paying their rent or council tax. The money is there waiting to be claimed. Even if you or your partner work you might still be entitled to help.

"Although we are in the early stages of the campaign we have already committed almost £100,000 in extra benefit over the past couple of months, and this is making a real difference to the lives of members of our community. These are benefits that will be paid this year and roll over into future years.

"There is potentially hundreds of thousands of pounds which still remain unclaimed, so don't delay, phone the Quids In hotline today and find out whether you are eligible for extra cash."

East Marsh sites beginning to Sparkle Again

A major clean-up has begun of five Grimsby grot spots which were nominated by members of the public and two of them are in the East Marsh Ward, and according to today’s Telegraph they are beginning “to sparkle once more”

Three tonnes of rubbish have already been removed from five sites across the town, which are being transformed by offenders on the Community Payback scheme.Earlier this year, thousands of North East Lincolnshire residents voted for which area of the five they wanted to be cleaned up first, with disused land behind the Boyes car park, off Wellington Street, topping the vote.

However, work in that area has been stalled – so cleaning up the next most popular choice, the Railway Street Bridge, has been completed first instead.Just a few months ago, the bridge was notoriously dirty – covered in graffiti and strewn with litter. However, after 47 hours of work, it has been painted and polished, and a quarter of a tonne of rubbish has been removed.

North East Lincolnshire Council’s neighbourhood crime and justice co-ordinator, Marcus Czarnecki, said: “The scheme is all about getting criminals to pay back into their communities. So far, the project is going really, really well.”Our region is one of 54 locations in the country chosen to pilot the project, which is part of the Home Office’s Justice Seen, Justice Done campaign.

Where are your kids tonight?

In the past weeks there has been a massive increase in the number of fire calls to properties in and around the East Marsh area, which not only pose a danger to local residents and attending fire crews, but also to the perpetrators of this anti – social behaviour.

Humberside Fire & Rescue Service are working with agencies throughout North East Lincolnshire in an effort to reduce the number of calls to arson attacks on derelict properties within East Marsh by engaging with youth groups, youth offending teams, police, Shoreline Housing and local ward councillors to reduce this anti social behaviour.

We need to do this before somebody is killed in an arson attack.

This area is without doubt one of the worse areas in the town.

The question I am asking you is; where are your kids tonight?

Are they out playing with matches and lighters? Having a laugh with their mates?

The question you need to ask is when does having a laugh with your mates become anti-social behaviour? When your children arrive home in the evening do they they smell of petrol, or do they have scorch marks on their clothes, do they smell of smoke? These are tell tale signs that you can spot. You can help us to bring down these figures and help make your community safer for all.

Your local fire station is on call 24 hours a day 365 days a year, they are ready to respond to any emergency call, theywill arrive within minutes ready to put their lives in danger to save others.

You can save a life quite easily by being aware of what your children are doing, and putting a stop to this

You can contact us confidentially by calling or texting 07940 737 141 and leave us information relating to deliberatley lit fires in your area.

Your community needs you.
